Academia today: Censor Homer, laud Hamas

At woke universities, the capitulation of the cultural establishment to woke progressivism appears complete. They are offended by the literary rapes in Ovid, but hail the real rapes of Hamas. Opinion.

The Assault on Western Culture and Homer: A Capitulation to Wokeness

Censoring the Classics

Universities across the UK are warning students of "uncomfortable views" in their studies of Homer, one of the most influential authors in Western history. Boris Johnson has condemned this as an attack on students' intellectual resilience, while the University of Nottingham has censored Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" for its "Christian expressions." Even Joyce's "Ulysses" has faced censorship at the University of Glasgow due to its references to race and gender.

The Destruction of Western Tradition

Professor Josephine Quinn of Oxford University argues that there is no such thing as "Western civilization." This undermines the foundations of our cultural and literary heritage, threatening to erase centuries of progress and achievement. The capitulation of the cultural establishment to woke progressives seems complete.

Canceling Colonialism and White Authors

At the School of Oriental Studies in London, students are pressured to ban classical philosophers like Plato and Aristotle, who are deemed "white" and "colonialists." Cambridge University teaches that the Anglo-Saxons are a "myth" that must be overcome to promote an "anti-racist" society.

Islam as the Antidote to Western Supremacy

One goal of this ideology is to replace Western thinkers with "invisible" peoples, particularly those in the Muslim world. This is why Homer is under attack, as he embodies the origins of our civilization and the concept of Europe.

A Shared Obsession: Homer and the Ayatollahs

Curiously, woke nihilists and Islamic fundamentalists seem to share an obsession with Homer. In 1979, the Islamic Revolution in Tehran confiscated half a million books, including Homer's "Iliad." The ayatollahs and their Western counterparts both recognize the transformative power of words and seek to control or eradicate them.

The Transformation of American Universities

Edward Said witnessed the destruction of Western literary tradition in American universities over a twenty-year period. This "regeneration" involved replacing classic texts with ideologies that promoted a new "humanism." The result has been a void in students' heads, ripe for alternative narratives.

Double Standards and Academic Boycotts

Professor Richard Seaford of the University of Exeter censors Homer while refusing to write for Israeli academic journals. The double standards are glaring: they censor literature yet justify violence in the Middle East. Professor Ilan Pappé of Exeter also expresses admiration for the anti-Israel movement.

A Call to Action

Aristotle's adage that "apathy is the last virtue of a dying society" rings true in the face of these attacks. We must resist the cultural erosion being perpetrated by woke progressives and preserve our intellectual heritage.
